September 25, 2019 Dear Concord Community, As you are well aware, the district has recently had to react to threats of violence made through the misuse of social media. This incident has all of us concerned. I’d like to share what I can and also provide some thoughts on what transpired. The students involved in this situation are all 15 years old or younger high school students. In the middle of the night, the district received word from one of the families involved that the police were interviewing four of our male high school students about posts made on SnapChat. The posts on SnapChat were made in a group chat that more than a dozen of our students on it. Around 5:00 a.m., the district received its first communication from our county police. At the time of my first conversation with the police force, there were a lot of unanswered questions. So, I made the decision to close school because I was not yet confident I had all of the information I needed to make a good decision. Since last Tuesday’s school cancellation, a lot has transpired. First, our administration has been in close contact with the families involved. Secondly, our administration has conducted a thorough investigation of the incident. Lastly, hearings have been scheduled to determine the school consequences involved. I believe that in the end this incident will make us better in the long run. Community members quickly brought the incident to the attention of our administration and our police force. For that, we are appreciative. All of the individuals involved have been cooperative through this process and it is an opportunity for us to reinforce proper social media use with all of our students. The individuals involved have been and will still go through a lot, but this is an opportunity for all of our students to learn from their mistakes. Lastly, almost all incidences of social media misuse involving minors happen on SnapChat. SnapChat creates the illusion of complete privacy to our students which prompts some to misuse it. In the coming months, the district has plans to provide programming to our students which emphasizes the positive use of social media while discouraging things like our recent incident. I would encourage all of our parents to have conversations with your children about their social media use to reinforce the messages they will receive at school. I’d like to thank our community for being supportive through this and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have. Sincerely, Dan Funston, Superintendent
